Human

The humans of the Clans are ruthless by necessity. Children are born into an endless war against an enemy who feels neither fear nor despair, and so must possess great mental fortitude. The teenage suicide rate amongst the Clans hovers near 5%.

Most Clan members are farmers, administrators, scavengers, or warriors, and children decide on (or are assigned to) a job at a very young age.

The EM-born and the EMI

In the early 21st century, a set of American universities were performing a genetic engineering experiment on human bio-electricity. The goal was to grow an artificial organ in a person that would allow them to store electricity, and to manipulate the flow of electricity through their body.

The organ (situated next to the spine, and called the blood battery) was entirely organic, but if someone possessing it were to have wires implanted in their skin and connected to certain nerves and muscles, they gained the ability to sense and manipulate electromagnetic fields outside their own bodies.

This system was called the Electromagnetic Interface (EMI), and it was used to communicate directly with electronic devices. During the exodus into the HAVEN zones, the few hundred people possessing EMIs agreed to be split up evenly amongst the HAVENS, so that all the people would have access to the advantages that the system offered.

Due to a quirk of the incomplete genetic engineering technology, the blood battery can only develop in a fetus if the mother has a blood battery as well (a full EMI is not necessary), but the strength of the blood battery depends on the genes of both parents.

When a child with a blood battery (an “EM-born”) is growing up, they must choose whether to get the surgery required to grant them an EMI. If they do so, they automatically become wards of the Clan, and lose their rights as individuals, but in exchange they are given great power and respect.
